12 November, 2009
Britain is now has more abortions than any other country in Europe’, as well as soaring teenage pregnancy rates
This is the first time the country has overtaken France, which has a population of 65 million, compared to Britain’s 59 million. Teenage pregnancies are believed to have pushed the figure upwards.
As a result, Britain now ranks fifth in the world behind Russia, the US, India and Japan.
Over the past decade, Britain’s teenage pregnancy rates have increased by almost a third, with half of all pregnancies of those under 18 ending in a termination.
The new figures were compiled by Norway-based pro-family pressure group, the Institute for Family Policies, from statistics collected by the EU’s statistical arm, Eurostat.
They revealed there were 219,336 abortions in England, Wales and Scotland in 2007, compared to 209,699 in France. It was also discovered that Britain had the highest number of teenage abortions - 48,150 among girls under 20, compared to France’s 31,779.
