Young Girls Out of Control
TEEN PREGNANCIES HIT RECORD LEVELS
UK, ENGLAND Sunday Mirror, Oct 23, 2005 | by VINCENT MOSS
TEENAGE pregnancies have soared to a new high.
In 1994, just 36,000 girls in England and Wales aged under 18 gave birth. By 2003 - the most recent year for which figures are available - the number had risen to more than 42,162. Britain now has the worst pregnancy rate among teenagers in Europe. Among the worst areas are Lambeth and Tower Hamlets in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Sunderland and Leeds.
The shock findings come as the Government desperately tries to halve the number of young mums by 2010 through its high-profile Teenage Pregnancy Strategy.
